Day 4 (Portamento)

I’ve been listening to The Drums a lot lately, which feels appropriate since that’s all we’ve been focusing on in the studio. We soared through most of the takes today. The first song of the session, “Home Again”, was cut up and Andrew concocted a fun groove, integrating elements of the original demo. “Roarin’ 20s” was recorded next. Then, we hit a wall with “Decoder Ring”. For about an hour, Andrew and Nick messed around with some different snares and kicks, trying to find the right sound. A few takes later and everything was in order again. The group listened back to a comped version of “I’ll Come Back” and felt that the tempo was a tad fast, so that will be something to deal with eventually. The only significant change that came about this morning was using pieces of cloth to dampen the toms. We attempted some bass as the session was coming to an end, but no dice. Tomorrow will be all about guitars. I’m ready for it!
